Reciprocating pumps tend to be used in low-flow, high-pressure applications. These positive displacement pumps can include both diaphragms and pistons to supply pumping action while valves regulate flow in and out of the pump. They can vary greatly in size, from large scale power pumps to small pressure-washer units.
Steam pumps directly couple a steam-driven piston to the piston of the power pump, thereby eliminating the need to convert rotary motion to linear motion. Steam pumps tend to be double acting on both the steam and fluid ends with a lever connected to the piston rod switching steam flow as the steam and pump pistons near the end of their strokes. Steam pumps are commonly found in hazardous locations in the oil, refining, and petrochemical industries.
